U of I Lounge
Krannert Center is loaded with experiences that you might not expect. Need a new late-night scene? Check out the eclectic mix of Afterglow performances that start around 9pm. Make connections with your fellow students as they perform in College of Fine and Applied Arts productions like Studiodance I, Polaroid Stories, and Into the Woods. Or see what else they’re up to at Dance at Illinois, Illinois Theatre, and Lyric Theatre @ Illinois. Plus you can eat, shop, take advantage of the quiet study spaces, use the wifi, relax, meet friends, and hang out. You may catch a soundcheck and decide to stick around for the concert or spy a dance flash mob right as it kicks off.
See a Show
A trip to the Center makes for a surprisingly cheap date. You probably know that you get deep discounts on tickets (a ticket to nearly any performance is $10 or less), but have you heard about Hot Seats? These tickets to select events are reserved just for U of I students. To check on Hot Seat availability, feel free to email us at email@example.com, call 217/333-6280 or 800/KCPATIX (527-2849), or visit the Ticket Office from 10am to 6pm every day (yes, that’s Monday-Sunday). Maybe you can surprise someone with tickets or slip over here on your own.
Be sure to peruse the offerings at Intermezzo for breakfast, lunch, and dinner or dessert before and after performances. Our reasonably priced lunch menu offers a tasty break from your studies. To celebrate acing that final—or just getting through it—indulge in a slice of heavenly cake. Or grab an organic yogurt. That’s comfort food too. Before you take your seat inside the theatre, you can stop in at Intermezzo, place an order, and find it ready for devouring at intermission or after the performance is over. Simple and quick.
Forgot your best friend’s birthday? Get to Promenade, Krannert Center’s fun and funky store, for goodies you won’t find anywhere else in town. Promenade stocks greeting cards, toys, jewelry, gadgets, specialty candy, scarves, and more—from elegant to quirky and from serious to playful. Whether you’re on the hunt for a tiny surprise to brighten someone’s day or an exceptional gift, this shop right inside the Lobby doors has options to fit any budget.
And to help stretch your student budget a bit farther, we offer a ton of free stuff, such as noontime Interval concerts—with plenty of activities like mini-massages or craft projects—and 5pm Traffic Jam events in the Lobby; late-night Afterglow concerts; and interactive sessions that invite you to meet face-to-face with performers, directors, conductors, and others who put on the more than 300 performances here each season. Free tours are offered every day at 3pm when classes are in session and will take you behind the scenes, in the wings, and through the lower levels of the building.
Older students can unwind nearly every Thursday during Krannert Uncorked. Live music—often solo singers or small acoustic groups—is featured every two weeks, and local vendors are on hand every time with the latest wine finds, prime vintages, and favorites to be savored. We’ll throw in a little cheese and some crackers, and if you add the conversation, you’ll have a chance to wind down (or up!) for the weekend.
For even more benefits, you can become a Loop member for just $25. You’ll receive invitations to special events just for donors, receive mailings with announcements about free activities and special offers, and enjoy a 10% discount on regularly priced merchandise at Promenade and on lunches at Intermezzo (between 11am and 2pm).
Want a community of friends? Join the Krannert Center Student Association (KCSA) and take part in the arts in Champaign-Urbana. You—and the 300 other members—get to see performances for free by serving as an usher. You gain experience in planning and marketing events, and you can enjoy the many outings and social activities for KCSA members. Go to a meeting, see what the group’s like, and get the backstage scoop on productions and events around the Center. Or as a first step, play with the street team for the Krannert Center Ambassadors. These committed arts lovers make connections between Krannert Center and students. If you get on the roster, you’ll meet a ton of new people and you might even get some free stuff.
Work with Us
If you’re thinking about getting a job that lets you use a power nailer or a thimble, wear all black (or paint-covered jeans) every day, rewards your hours (and hours and hours) of work on chord progressions, or encourages you to stay up into the wee hours, consider a job in the arts. Internships are available in nearly every area of the Center. Graduate students can be awarded assistantships either through their programs of study or because of their knowledge base. So if you have a knack for raising money (maybe you were a champion cookie seller) or can work a boom or think you might like to write ad copy, send us a line with your thoughts or check our employment section—we’d be glad to have you around, and who knows where it might lead?
Many of the students you’ll see around the halls in the lower levels, performing onstage, and laboring behind the scenes are in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. They have opportunities to shape landscapes, pioneer technology, create elegant web designs, mount experimental productions, photograph remote regions of the globe, sing classic melodies, move in ways they imagined they could someday, practice ancient arts, develop new forms of expression, build cities, and curate art exhibitions. They are art makers, knowledge builders, and problem solvers. It’s never too late to change your major.
