U of I Lounge

Krannert Center is loaded with experiences that you might not expect. Need a new late-night scene? Check out the eclectic mix of Afterglow performances. Or for something a bit more local, watch your fellow students perform in College of Fine and Applied Arts productions like The Marriage of Figaro, He and She, or Studiodance II. Or see what else they're up to at Dance at Illinois, the Department of Theatre, and the School of Music Opera Program.

And a trip to the Center makes for a surprisingly cheap date. You probably know that you get deep discounts on tickets, but have you heard about Hot Seats? These tickets to select events are reserved just for U of I students. To check on Hot Seat availability, feel free to e-mail us, call 217/333-6280 or 800/KCPATIX (527-2849), or visit the Ticket Office from 10am to 6pm daily. Maybe you can get that special someone into the hippest show of the year after all.

Be sure to peruse the offerings at Intermezzo for breakfast, lunch, and dinner or dessert before and after performances. Our reasonably priced healthy lunch menu offers up a tasty break from your studies. To celebrate acing that final—or just getting through it—indulge in a slice of devilishly heavenly cake. Or grab an organic yogurt. That’s comfort food too.

And to help stretch your student budget a bit farther, we offer dozens of free events, such as noontime Interval concerts and 5pm Traffic Jam events in the lobby; late-night Afterglow concerts; and Creative Intersections sessions that invite you to meet face-to-face with performers, directors, conductors, and others who put on the more than 300 performances each season. Free tours are offered every day at 3pm when classes are in session. Also, be sure to take advantage of $5 to $10 seats for fantastic performances in the Foellinger Great Hall.

For even more benefits, you can join the Loop for just $25. You’ll receive invitations to special donor events, get recognition in the Krannert Center Lobby, receive mailings with announcements about free activities, and enjoy a 10% discount on regularly priced merchandise at The Promenade and on lunches at Intermezzo (between 11am and 2pm).

Free parking, reasonably priced tickets, a place to have dessert after the show: You can’t beat it for a night out.

We’re Here to Help
Forgot your best friend’s birthday? Get to The Promenade, Krannert Center’s gift shop, for wares you won’t find anywhere else in town. The Promenade stocks our bamboo t-shirts, cards, jewelry, journals, posters, chocolate, and more—from elegant to quirky and from serious to playful.

Want a community of friends? Join the Krannert Center Student Association (KCSA) for fun projects that support and let you play a role in the arts in Champaign-Urbana. You—and the 300 other members—get to see performances for free by serving as an usher. You can indulge your desire to be onstage by participating in On the Rocks, a presentation of one-act plays written, produced, and acted by students, or sign up for the Murder Mystery Dinner and a night of mayhem. You can also lend your talents to the annual Winter Lights Festival, A Taste of the Arts, and the International Festival (I-Fest), all family-oriented activities that highlight arts from across the globe that are also right here in our community. Or you can help plan and enjoy the many outings and social activities for KCSA members. Visit the KCSA’s blog The Callboard, see what the group’s like, and get the behind-the-scenes scoop on productions and events around the Center.

Older students can unwind nearly every Thursday for Uncorked. There’s always music—often solo singers or small groups on Stage 5 in the Lobby—and local wine dealers are on hand with the latest finds, vintage flavors, and favorites to be savored. We’ll throw in a little cheese and some crackers, and if you add the conversation, you’ll have a chance to wind down (or up!) for the weekend.

If you’re thinking about getting a job that lets you use a blow torch or a thimble, wear all black (or paint-covered jeans) every day, rewards your humming, or encourages you to stay up into the wee hours, consider a job in the arts. Internships are available throughout nearly every area of the Center. Graduate students can be awarded assistantships either through their programs of study or because of their knowledge base. So if you have a knack for raising money (maybe you were a champion cookie seller) or can work a boom or think you might like to write ad copy, send us a line with your thoughts—we’d be glad to have you around, and who knows where it might lead? Some of our students will be occasionally making appearances as guest bloggers for Admissions, so stop by the get their views from the inside.
